The United Arab Emirates has introduced a new long-term visa program known as ‘Blue Residency’.
This program offers 10-year visas to individuals recognized for their contributions and efforts towards environmental protection, this also includes sustainability efforts both within and beyond the UAE.
But who are professionals who skills set resonates and aligned with these opportunities?
The UAE Blue Residency will be awarded to advocates of environmental initiatives, such; as members of international firms, organizations, and non-governmental organizations (NGOs); recipients of global awards; and notable activists and researchers dedicated to environmental causes.
Implicitly, individuals and organizations, whose work and professionals grits falls within the aforementioned would benefit largely from the recent offer.
The country launched this residency scheme as part of its initiatives to designate 2024 as the year of sustainability.
The emphasis on sustainability was carried over into 2024 following a year marked by environmental themes, during which residents were encouraged to engage in sustainable practices.
Eligible candidates are encouraged to apply via the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs, and Port Security. Additionally, relevant entities are authorized to nominate individuals for this long-term residency.
According to Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, Sheikh “The sustainability of our economy has become linked to the sustainability of our environment”. The GMD of the recruitment agency named Mackenzie Jones, David Mackenzie, admitted to the continued success of UAE’s 10-year visa program.
On the benefits it offers, it was said that, “The biggest benefit [of a ten-year visa] is that it has made it possible to live here without needing to be under the sponsorship of a company. It gives you so much freedom.”
The announcement of a blue visa for contributions to protecting the environment has been groundbreaking, said Dr Sultan Al Jaber, Cop28 President and Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology.
“The UAE blue residency visa aims to attract global environmental leaders to contribute to the UAE’s sustainable economic and social development,” said Dr Al Jaber.
“It underscores the nation’s dedication to leveraging advanced technologies and artificial intelligence to create impactful solutions.
“With a forward-thinking approach, these solutions will address climate challenges and transform them into opportunities for a brighter future for humanity and our planet,” he said.
Dr. Al Jaber also said the blue visa is in line with the legacy created by the Cop28 conference, the UN climate change summit that took place in Dubai last year.
“The conference was a paradigm shift, showcasing the UAE’s unwavering commitment to multilateralism, international co-operation, and developing a united global approach to the challenges of climate change.
“This visa will build on that good work and will help further establish the UAE as a front-runner in the development of technologies, such as artificial intelligence, that can help address climate change,” he said.
Recall that in 2019, the UAE introduced a 10-year residency program known as Golden Visas for investors, entrepreneurs, scientists, exceptional students and graduates, and pioneers in humanitarian fields, among others.
Three years later, the country launched a five-year residency program named Green Visas, targeting skilled professionals, freelancers, investors, and entrepreneurs.

Captain John T Okakpu, has said that the resumption of Emirates Airlines flights to Nigeria  will benefit the West African country’s cargo business.
Similarly, Capt. Okakpu said Emirates flights do not threaten the operations of Air Peace’s flight into the Middle East.
Speaking to Techeconomy correspondent, the CEO of abx World, said:
“The truth is that the resumption of Emirates back into the Nigeria Airspace would not affect Air Peace. The only area it is going to positively affect Nigeria, is in respect of Cargo, because a lot of Cargo from far the Eastern part of the world comes into Nigeria, so it is easier for Emirates Airline to bring those Cargo to Nigeria.
Air Peace
According to him, “the coming back of Emirates Airlines to the Nigeria space is laudable. Because a lot of Nigeria goes to India and Indian sub-continent and Asia, it will serve as a better connection for them.
Recall that yesterday, Adnan Kazim, Emirates’ deputy president and chief commercial officer disclosed that Emirates will resume daily flights to Nigeria on October 1, 2024.
“The Lagos-Dubai service has traditionally been popular with customers in Nigeria and we hope to reconnect leisure and business travellers to Dubai and onwards to our network of over 140 destinations.”
“We thank the Nigerian government for their partnership and support in re-establishing this route and we look forward to welcoming passengers back onboard.”
Accordingly, “with the resumption of operations to Nigeria, Emirates operates to 19 gateways in Africa with 157 flights per week from Dubai, with further reach to an additional 130 regional points in Africa through its code share and interline partnerships with South African Airways, Airlink, Royal Air Maroc, Tunis Air, among others.”
Capt. Okakpu, however noted that Nigerians who shuttle between Nigeria and London, would have a good deal with Nigeria Air Peace Airline on the basis of its just 6 hours direct flight to London against 9 to 10 hours obtainable elsewhere.
“But to London, is definitely not good at all, you don’t want to fly 9-hours going somewhere and fly another 10 hours going another way. For a journey that is like 6 hours, and not 9-hours and 10 hours this way, when you get to Dubai. That is why Air Peace is actually competing”.
“Because, they must first take you to their country, before they take you to London. So, a lot of people don’t understand that Turkish Airways, for instance, are going to take you to their country (Turkey) first and most of the time they will mistreat you there for being a Nigerian.
“So, why don’t you just jump into a flight that in six hours you get to your destination. For instance, I heard about a lady that spent 24-Hours, just to catch a flight; that is not worth it. “
“So, if you go to London using Emirates Airlines, it will take you about two days to get there. The truth is the resumption of Emirates back into the Nigeria Airspace would not affect Air Peace. The only area it is going to positively affect Nigeria is in respect of cargo, because a lot of cargo from the far eastern part of the world come into Nigeria; so it is easier for Emirates airline to bring those cargo to Nigeria.
“Cargo from Europe, for instance, can take up to three to six days. So, on a cargo side, Nigeria stands to benefit as it [Emirates] will increase the capacity of Cargo coming in.
Emirates airlines
“Many cargo airlines don’t come to Nigeria any longer, because of the state of the economy. Only Turkish Airlines comes, once in a while. Once upon a time cargos came into Nigeria four times in a week, but now they hardly come.
Emirates, Saudi Air Cargo used to come like three times in a week, but now, they don’t even come at all.
“When you see cargoes being collected at the Airport, most of them go underbelly, and airlines are skeptical about it, because most of the time they carry agricultural products, and once there is contamination on arrival, they will destroy the goods. If that is done, the authorities over there will bill the airline for the cost of destruction, and that is why there are lots of cargoes on British Airways going to London, they are not carrying them because of contamination. These contaminations are caused by Nigerian government agencies especially NDLEA, NAFDAC and others, because of the ways and manners they inspect goods.
“So, Emirates coming back to the Nigeria airspace, first off on passengers side going to Europe to me is not advisable, but in terms of cargo Nigeria have lots to gain.
“Also for those travelling to places such as: Australia, Japan and the far Eastern part of the world, it will be of immense benefit for them.
R-l: Dr Afolabi Taiwo, chairman, SIFAX Group; Adenike Aboderin, MD/CEO of SAHCO, and Capt. John T Okakpu, founder/CEO abx World.
“But the question is, if you are travelling to London, would you go to UAE, get a visa and later get a flight, while with Air Peace you can just get your flight and go.
“Because the coming of Air Peace in the Aviation industry, has really safed the Nigeria Aviation Industry and shaken it to the foundation.”
Emirates, said upon resumption of its services to Nigeria from 1 October 2024, it will deploy a Boeing 777-300ER.
EK783 will depart Dubai at 0945hrs, arriving in Lagos at 1520hrs; the return flight EK784 will leave Lagos at 1730 hrs and arrives in Dubai at 0510hrs the next day.

The Nigerian Communications Commission has suspended the issuance of communication Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO), Interconnect Exchange, and Value Added Service Aggregator licenses, Techeconomy can report.
The announcement was contained in a public notice issued by Mr. Reuben Muoka, the director of Public Affairs at NCC, on Friday May 17, 2024.
NCC said the suspension is in line with its powers under the Nigerian Communications Act (NCA) 2003 to grant and renew licenses, promote fair competition, and develop the communications Industry.
It, however, noted that all pending applications for the same licences would still be considered and treated accordingly.
Explaining the rationale behind the suspension, NCC in the public notice said,
“This temporary suspension is necessary to enable the Commission to conduct a thorough review of several key areas within these categories, including the current level of competition, market saturation, and current market dynamics.
“The public is invited to note that during the suspension period commencing on 17th of May, 2024, new applications for the aforementioned licenses will not be accepted. This is without prejudice to pending applications before the Commission which will be considered on its merits.”
NCC’s database shows that 45 companies are currently licensed as VAS aggregators. The VAS Aggregator licence was introduced in 2029 to guard against rising anti-competitive practices and other unfair sharing formulas between VAS licensees and the Mobile Network Operators (MNOs). The Aggregators play the role of the middlemen between the MNOs and the VAS providers.
The MVNO licence is the newest category of license introduced by the NCC. As of the last count, 43 companies have been licensed to operate in the five tiers of the licence. However, none of them have rolled out service yet.
An MVNO is a telecommunications product and service operator that rides on top of the infrastructure capacity of a fully licensed mobile telecommunication service provider or mobile network operator (MNO).
